Workshop on RF and Microwave Signal Generation and Measurement Coincides with APS Conference
A free workshop covering
techniques for RF/Microwave signal generation and measurements is available to
the technical community during the 2013 American Physics Society annual
meeting. A total of 120 spots are available on a first come first serve basis

The workshop is sponsored by
Berkeley Nucleonics (BNC Corp) and is held as part of the APS conference just
after exhibit hours at the Hilton
Baltimore, Key Ballroom 3 on Tuesday, March 19 from 5:30‐7:30PM. BNC will also have a booth at the APS Show
which runs from March 18 - 22. This workshop will give researchers and
engineers in the RF/Microwave field an in-depth overview of techniques for
signal generation and measurement, along with hands on activities using
instrumentation and software tools. “The
APS Conference was selected as one of several venues well suited for this
workshop by Berkeley Nucleonics,” comments Alex Palm, RF Product Line Manager.

Model 575 - AT45-High Voltage – 45V Pulses with Fast Risetimes

This new output stage for the Model 575 Digital Delay / Pulse Generator increases max pulse amplitudes to 45V. The company has used modern circuitry to achieve these higher voltages with the same pulse generator architecture, resulting in a low cost for the dual channel output stage. The 45V pulses have risetimes <2.0 nS and pulse widths as wide as 10 seconds, with repetition rates up to 100 KHz. The performance achievements enable faster testing of high power lasers systems and enable developments in laser diode drivers and pump lasers. Other applications which benefit are capacitor banks, semiconductor assay and pyrotechnics detonations. Sled tests and high speed cameras, shutters and frame-grabbers all have potential benefits with the fast high voltage pulser.
"While we have offered pulsers up to 1000 Volts for quite some time, the fast risetimes and rep rates in the Model AT45 introduce new functionality customers have asked for. We can upgrade units in the field or offer the systems new for under three thousand dollars", comments Applications Engineer John Yee.
"The higher voltage outputs come at a time when customers are reluctant to purchase additional capital equipment and are looking for expanding the functionality of their existing product. We are pleased with the results."

BNC Outfits Lab with 32 Channels of Precision Timing

Berkeley Nucleonics, a manufacturer of pulse and delay generators, arbitrary waveform generators and frequency counters, was selected by a European research establishment to provide a large timing system for laser timing and triggering in new experimental efforts on high energy, high power lasers and hot plasmas. The timing of the BNC Model 588, which combines 8 channels of delay and width in a rack mount module less than 2 inches high, allows researchers to combine 100’s of channels of timing in a small area. The timing properties and features of the BNC Digital Delay Generators (250 picosecond resolution, improved 200 picosecond low jitter, channel by channel rate and amplitude selection). Major goal of research in this field include thermonuclear fusion for energy production, materials processing, physics of high-energy-density matter and planetary science.

BNC receives a warm welcome in Asia
The international technical community has growing needs for high performance instruments that are priced reasonably and have reliable designs. Our products have a reputation for lasting (some up to 40 years) and that reputation has carried into Asia. Many researchers in the US are now teachers in Singapore, Taiwan or other Asian countries. They have taking their BNC products along and new customers are emerging. Even countries void of a high-tech industry have found need for our entry level arbs and dmms, used often by hobbiest or electronics repair shops. In the photo below, our agent in Hong Kong shows experimenters the multi-channel digital delay generator with low jitter and precise delay. The multi-channel control box is useful for timing, gating, syncing or delaying all sorts of experimental components. Cameras, data acquisition, triggers and amplifiers all need precise timing and precise digital delays.
